Mesophotic corals grow this far down on about one percent of the surface light. Divers who reach them keep finding fish nobody has named yet — on a good day, several in a single afternoon.

Every night, a billion tonnes of fish, squid and krill rise from this layer to feed at the surface, then sink again before dawn. It happens in every ocean, and it has been happening every single night for millions of years.

Roughly three quarters of the animals here make their own light — for luring, for signalling, for hiding. Bioluminescence is not the exception in the ocean. It is the norm.

No sunlight reaches beyond this line. Not a trace, not at noon, not at the equator. From here to the bottom, every light you'd see is one an animal decided to switch on.

The deepest lungs

A sperm whale hunting squid can hold a single breath for ninety minutes at this depth. On the way down its ribcage folds inward and its lungs collapse on purpose — the air would be lethal if it stayed.

A squid with elbows

The bigfin squid drifts here on ten identical arms, each up to twenty times its body length, held out at a right-angled bend. It has been filmed perhaps two dozen times. Nobody has ever caught one.

Water hot enough to melt lead

Hydrothermal vents pour out fluid at 400 °C. It doesn't boil — the pressure won't allow it. Entire ecosystems here run on the chemistry of that water and have never needed the sun at all.

Titanic

The wreck sits on the seabed here, in perfect darkness, at 380 times atmospheric pressure. It took seventy-three years to find it. Rust-eating bacteria are quietly finishing the job.

The plain

Flatter than anywhere on land and larger than every continent combined, the abyssal plain covers half the surface of the planet. It is the single most common landscape on Earth, and we have mapped less of it than we have of Mars.

Snowfall

A constant drift of dead plankton, faecal pellets and shed mucus sinks past you at roughly a hundred metres a day. Marine snow is the only food delivery service down here, and it takes weeks to arrive.

Two degrees, forever

Below the thermocline the water sits near freezing and never changes — no seasons, no day, no weather. Some of it last touched the sky off Greenland a thousand years ago.

Named for hell

The hadal zone exists only inside ocean trenches — long, narrow scars where one tectonic plate slides beneath another. It accounts for less than half a percent of the seafloor.

The deepest fish ever filmed

A young snailfish, pale and gelatinous, recorded in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench in 2022. Biochemistry says fish simply cannot function much below 8,200 m. This one was already 136 m past the argument.

Found on the floor of the Mariana Trench in 2018. Of the deepest-known pieces of human debris, most are packaging. We reached the bottom of the ocean four times. Our rubbish got there more often.

The bottom of the world

The deepest point in the Mariana Trench, and the deepest known place on Earth. Everest would stand here with two kilometres of water still above its summit. The pressure is 1,086 bar — a tonne on every square centimetre.

Twenty-seven people have been to the Moon. Fewer than that have been here.
